How to Turn an AO3 Fic into an Audiobook
AO3 already gives you an EPUB of every work. That file is all you need — the AI does the rest, with a separate voice for every character. Free to start on Android.

Why the EPUB matters
AO3 is unusually good to its readers here: every work ships with a real Download button, and the EPUB it produces already knows where the chapters end. That structure survives the conversion, so you get an audiobook with a chapter list you can skip around in — not one four-hour block you have to scrub through.
This is why fic converts more cleanly than most things people try to listen to. A scanned PDF has no text to read; a web page brings headers and navigation along for the ride. An AO3 EPUB is just the story.
Why a full cast, specifically for fic
Fanfiction is dialogue. That is more or less the point of it — the scenes readers come back for are two characters talking. Standard text-to-speech reads all of it in one flat voice, which is exactly where a long conversation stops being followable and you start scrolling back to work out who said what.
Giving every character their own voice fixes that at the root. Your ship sounds like two people, not one narrator doing both halves.
Fics that will never have audio
No fic is ever getting an official audiobook. Podfic exists and is wonderful, but it is volunteer work — a tiny fraction of AO3 has one, and the odds that it covers your specific 400k-word slow burn are close to zero. Generating audio yourself is the only way most of it gets heard at all.

Where exactly is the Download button on AO3?
On the work page, in the grey header block that holds the rating, fandom and stats — top right, next to the work title. It opens a short list of formats: AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF and HTML. EPUB is the one to pick.
Which format works best?
EPUB. It carries the chapter breaks AO3 already knows about, so the audiobook gets a real chapter list instead of one continuous block. PDF works but flattens that structure, and HTML brings site furniture with it.
Can I do a whole series at once?
Not in one file — AO3 downloads work by work, not by series. Download each work and upload them separately; they sit in your library as separate books, which is usually what you want anyway for progress tracking.
What about a 500k-word fic?
Fine. Audio generates chapter by chapter in the background while you listen to the earlier ones, so a long fic converts gradually rather than all at once. Hours are spent once per chapter and replaying is free forever.
Do restricted works download?
Only if you can already read them. Works marked "registered users only" need you logged in to AO3 — the Download button then behaves normally. Lyraboo never touches AO3 itself; it only reads the file you give it.
Is this allowed?
You are converting a copy you legitimately downloaded, for your own listening. That is the same thing as reading it. Keep the audio to yourself — don’t repost it as a podfic without the author’s permission, since podficcing etiquette in fandom is its own thing and many authors have explicit preferences.
Does it work on iPhone?
Not yet — Lyraboo is currently Android-only. iOS is on the roadmap.
