Listen to Fanfiction Like a Real Audiobook

Your favorite fic will never get an official audiobook — but AO3 gives you the EPUB, and AI can give it a full cast. Every character with their own voice, hands-free.

From AO3 to your ears in three steps

Works with any fic you can download as a file — one-shots to million-word epics.

Download the fic as EPUB

On AO3 every work has a Download button with an EPUB option — one tap, and even a 500k-word epic becomes a single file on your phone.

Upload it to Lyraboo

The AI reads the fic, separates narration from dialogue, and casts a distinct voice for every character — which is everything in banter-heavy fanfiction.

Listen like it’s Spotify

A familiar player with chapters, progress, and background playback. Commute, gym, chores — your fic keeps going while your screen stays off.

Fanfiction is the most under-audiobooked writing on Earth

Millions of stories, some longer than entire published series, read by millions of people — and virtually none of it will ever be professionally narrated. Podfic heroes cover a beloved sliver; screen readers drone through the rest in one flat voice where every character sounds identical.

That flatness hurts fanfic more than any other genre, because fanfic runs on dialogue — banter, arguments, confessions. Lyraboo’s AI casts the fic like an audio drama: it detects who is speaking and gives each character a consistent, distinct voice. Our voices are honest mid-tier TTS rather than voice actors — but you will never sit through a two-page argument wondering who just said what.

Built to disappear into the background

No settings to learn: upload the EPUB once and the fic behaves like an album in a music app — chapters, resume, speed control. Reading web serials instead? The same flow works for Royal Road stories, and the general how-to lives here: how to turn a book into an audiobook.

AO3 (Archive of Our Own) is a project of the Organization for Transformative Works. Lyraboo is an independent app, not affiliated with AO3, Wattpad, or FFN. Convert fics for personal listening only — and leave the authors kudos.

Why listeners choose Lyraboo

The things people notice in the first chapter — and the reasons they stay.

Every character gets their own voice

Lyraboo’s AI finds every character in the book and casts a distinct voice for each — automatically, for every book. You always know who is speaking, and dialogue sounds like a real conversation instead of one narrator doing all the parts. Most reading and text-to-speech apps use one voice for everything.

The text follows along, like lyrics

Under the player, the book scrolls with the voice the way song lyrics do in Spotify: words light up as they are spoken, each line shows who says it, and tapping any word jumps there.

A player that feels like a music app

Chapters, speed from 0.25× to 3×, background playback with lock-screen controls, and it picks up exactly where you stopped.

Upload, and you are listening in minutes

Pick an EPUB, PDF or TXT and there is nothing to set up: the first chapter is ready in about one to two minutes, and the rest generate while you listen.

Any book you have, not just a catalogue

Novels, fanfiction and web-serial exports, indie ebooks, study PDFs — plus over 1,000 English classics already in the app.

Fair on cost

One free hour of listening every month, no card needed. Hours are spent once per chapter — replaying is always free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I listen to AO3 fics as audiobooks?

Open the work on AO3, tap Download → EPUB, then upload that file to Lyraboo. The first chapter is ready to play in about 1–2 minutes, with each character voiced separately. The rest of the fic generates in the background while you listen.

What about Wattpad or FFN stories?

AO3 makes it easiest because EPUB download is built into every work. Platforms without official EPUB export are trickier — if the author offers downloads or has cross-posted to AO3, use that. Any fic you legitimately have as an EPUB, PDF, or TXT file works.

Isn’t this what podfic is?

Podfic — fan-recorded readings — is wonderful, but it exists for a tiny fraction of fics: recording takes the narrator many hours per chapter. AI narration covers the other 99%: the rare pairs, the 400k-word slow burns, the fic that updated last night.

My fic is a work in progress — what happens when it updates?

Download the updated EPUB and upload it — new chapters generate from where the story continues. Hours are only spent on newly generated audio, and replaying anything already generated is always free.

Is converting fics to audio okay to do?

For your own personal listening of a fic the author published freely — that’s the same spirit as reading it with your device’s screen reader. Don’t redistribute the audio or claim it as podfic, and support the authors: kudos, comments, and reblogs matter to the people writing your favorite worlds.
