Any DRM-free EPUB you own: purchased ebooks, indie novels, web serial exports, fanfiction downloads. PDF and TXT work the same way.
Chapters are read from the EPUB structure, narration is separated from dialogue, and every character is given a distinct voice automatically.
The first chapter is ready in about 1–2 minutes and plays in a normal audiobook player: chapters, speed control, background playback.
Most ebooks never receive an audio edition. A studio recording costs thousands of dollars and weeks of a narrator’s time, so publishers commission them only for titles that will sell enough copies to pay that back. Everything else — indie novels, translated fiction, out-of-print books, self-published series, web serials — stays text forever.
That is the gap this fills. If you already own the EPUB, you can have it narrated with a full cast rather than waiting for an audiobook edition that is never coming.
Most EPUB readers can speak the page with your phone’s built-in voice. That is useful, and it is a different thing: one flat narrator, tied to the text on screen, reading whatever is visible. Converting produces an actual audiobook — persistent chapters, a real player, and a separate voice for every character, so a three-way conversation in a novel still sounds like three people.
PDF and TXT convert the same way. If your file is a PDF, the PDF to audiobook guide covers what works and what does not — the short version is that text-based PDFs are fine and scans are not. New to all of this? Start with how to turn a book into an audiobook.
Yes — every account gets free listening hours each month, no card required. That is enough to hear full chapters of your own EPUB with the multi-voice narration before deciding to pay anything.
EPUB carries its own structure. Chapters are explicit, text flows in reading order, and there are no page headers, footers or column breaks to trip over. A well-made PDF converts fine too, but if you have the choice, EPUB gives the cleaner audiobook.
No. Books locked to Kindle or Adobe DRM cannot be opened by other apps at all — that is the point of DRM. Lyraboo works with DRM-free EPUB files: indie and self-published releases, author downloads, Patreon rewards, public domain editions, and stores that sell unlocked files.
Normal case. Audio generates chapter by chapter in the background while you listen to the earlier ones, and hours are spent only once per chapter — replaying audio you already generated is free forever.
Not yet — Lyraboo is currently Android-only. iOS is on the roadmap.
