Can You Turn a Kindle Book into an Audiobook?

Yes — in three legitimate ways. Which one works depends on the book: whether Kindle can read it aloud, whether it has an Audible edition, and whether it is DRM-free.

Facts about Kindle and Amazon come from Amazon’s help pages and its announcement about DRM-free downloads, checked in October 2026.

The short answer

Kindle app Assistive Reader Your phone’s voice, one voice for everyoneKindle books with Enhanced Typesetting

1. Assistive Reader in the Kindle app

On Android, open the book, tap the top of the screen, open the Aa menu, choose More and turn on Assistive Reader. It reads supported books — those with Enhanced Typesetting, including Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading titles — with the phone’s text-to-speech voice, highlighting as it goes. Free and built in, but one voice reads every character.

2. An Audible edition

Many popular books have a professionally narrated audiobook on Audible, bought separately. If one exists and you want a human narrator, this is the simplest route.

3. A DRM-free download, narrated by a full cast

Since January 20, 2026, when an author publishes a Kindle book without DRM and allows downloads, Amazon lets verified buyers download it as EPUB or PDF from their account. That file is yours to read anywhere — and you can upload it to Lyraboo, which turns it into a full-cast audiobook: every character gets their own AI voice, with a narrator for the rest, in a music-app-style player. Many indie authors publish without DRM, so this often works for exactly the books that will never get an Audible edition.

What does not work: books with DRM (the download option simply is not offered), and borrowed books such as Kindle Unlimited. Lyraboo does not open protected files, and we do not recommend removing DRM.

Books from other places

The same goes for any DRM-free ebook: indie authors’ own stores, public domain libraries and fanfiction archives. Start with uploading your own book and listening to it, or see ebook to audiobook for MOBI and AZW files.

Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading, Audible and Amazon are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. Lyraboo is an independent app and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Amazon.

Why listeners choose Lyraboo

The things people notice in the first chapter — and the reasons they stay.

Every character gets their own voice

Lyraboo’s AI finds every character in the book and casts a distinct voice for each — automatically, for every book. You always know who is speaking, and dialogue sounds like a real conversation instead of one narrator doing all the parts. Most reading and text-to-speech apps use one voice for everything.

The text follows along, like lyrics

Under the player, the book scrolls with the voice the way song lyrics do in Spotify: words light up as they are spoken, each line shows who says it, and tapping any word jumps there.

A player that feels like a music app

Chapters, speed from 0.25× to 3×, background playback with lock-screen controls, and it picks up exactly where you stopped.

Upload, and you are listening in minutes

Pick an EPUB, PDF or TXT and there is nothing to set up: the first chapter is ready in about one to two minutes, and the rest generate while you listen.

Any book you have, not just a catalogue

Novels, fanfiction and web-serial exports, indie ebooks, study PDFs — plus over 1,000 English classics already in the app.

Fair on cost

One free hour of listening every month, no card needed. Hours are spent once per chapter — replaying is always free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a Kindle book into an audiobook?

Yes, in three legitimate ways. The Kindle app’s Assistive Reader reads supported books aloud with your phone’s voice. If the book has an Audible edition, you can buy the narration. And if the author published it DRM-free, Amazon lets verified buyers download it as EPUB or PDF (since January 2026) — that file can be turned into a full-cast audiobook in an app like Lyraboo.

Can I upload a Kindle book to Lyraboo?

Only a DRM-free copy. Most Kindle Store books are protected and open only in Kindle apps, and Lyraboo does not open protected files. If Amazon offers an EPUB or PDF download for a book you bought, that file works.

Does the Kindle app read books aloud on Android?

Yes. Assistive Reader in the Kindle app reads books that support Enhanced Typesetting, using the phone’s text-to-speech voice, with highlighting and speed control. It reads every character in the same voice.

Can I download Kindle Unlimited books as EPUB?

No. Per Amazon’s announcement, EPUB and PDF downloads are for verified buyers of DRM-free titles; borrowed books, including Kindle Unlimited, are not included.
