Your own books

Upload Your Own Book and Listen to It

You already have the book — an EPUB, a PDF, a fanfic download. Upload it to Lyraboo and it plays as an audiobook, with a different voice for every character.

From file to audiobook

Three steps, and the first chapter is ready in a minute or two.

Upload the file

In Lyraboo, tap + and pick an EPUB, PDF or TXT from your phone, Downloads or Google Drive. Nothing to set up.

It becomes an audiobook

The book is split into chapters, every character gets their own AI voice, and the first chapter is ready in about one to two minutes.

Listen like a music app

Chapters, 0.25×–3× speed, lock-screen controls, and the text scrolling under the player like lyrics. It remembers where you stopped.

The short answer

On Android, upload the EPUB, PDF or TXT to Lyraboo. It reads the whole book, works out which character says each line and gives every character their own AI voice, with a narrator for the rest — automatically, with nothing to set up. You listen in a player that feels like a music app, with the text scrolling underneath like song lyrics. It is free to start with one hour a month.

Files that work

  • EPUB — the best choice: chapters and paragraphs come through cleanly.
  • PDF with real text — if you can select and copy a sentence, it can be narrated.
  • TXT — plain text, split into chapters automatically.
  • Fanfiction and web serials — EPUB downloads from AO3, FicHub or Royal Road exports. See AO3 to audiobook.
  • DRM-free store downloads — indie authors’ shops, public domain sites, and the DRM-free Kindle books Amazon now lets you download as EPUB or PDF (how that works).

Files that do not

  • DRM-protected purchases — most Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo store books open only in their own apps.
  • Scanned PDFs — pictures of pages with no text layer need OCR first.
  • MOBI and AZW — convert a DRM-free copy to EPUB first; the ebook to audiobook guide shows how.

Other apps that do this

Lyraboo is our app, so here is how it sits next to the others — facts about them come from their own websites and Google Play listings, checked in October 2026.

Pick Lyraboo for fiction you want to hear as a full-cast audiobook. ElevenReader if you need iPhone or the web. @Voice for a free reader that uses your phone’s voices and records MP3s. Éist for free on-device listening on iPhone and Android. The full rundown is in the best apps to turn your own books into audiobooks.

Honest limits

Lyraboo is Android only, needs an internet connection, plays audio inside the app rather than exporting MP3s, and cannot narrate scanned PDFs. English books sound best; Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Russian are in beta.

ElevenReader, @Voice Aloud Reader, Éist, Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo are trademarks of their respective owners. Lyraboo is an independent app and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any of them.

Why listeners choose Lyraboo

The things people notice in the first chapter — and the reasons they stay.

Every character gets their own voice

Lyraboo’s AI finds every character in the book and casts a distinct voice for each — automatically, for every book. You always know who is speaking, and dialogue sounds like a real conversation instead of one narrator doing all the parts. Most reading and text-to-speech apps use one voice for everything.

The text follows along, like lyrics

Under the player, the book scrolls with the voice the way song lyrics do in Spotify: words light up as they are spoken, each line shows who says it, and tapping any word jumps there.

A player that feels like a music app

Chapters, speed from 0.25× to 3×, background playback with lock-screen controls, and it picks up exactly where you stopped.

Upload, and you are listening in minutes

Pick an EPUB, PDF or TXT and there is nothing to set up: the first chapter is ready in about one to two minutes, and the rest generate while you listen.

Any book you have, not just a catalogue

Novels, fanfiction and web-serial exports, indie ebooks, study PDFs — plus over 1,000 English classics already in the app.

Fair on cost

One free hour of listening every month, no card needed. Hours are spent once per chapter — replaying is always free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an app where I can upload my own book and listen to it?

Yes. On Android, Lyraboo turns an EPUB, PDF or TXT you upload into an audiobook with chapters and a different AI voice for every character, so dialogue sounds like a full-cast production. ElevenReader (Android, iPhone, web) and Éist (Android, iPhone) also read your own files, in one voice; @Voice Aloud Reader (Android) reads them with the voices installed on your phone.

Which file should I upload — EPUB or PDF?

EPUB if you have it: the chapters and paragraphs come through cleanly. A PDF works when it has real text — you can select and copy a sentence. Scanned PDFs (pictures of pages) cannot be narrated.

Can I upload a book I bought on Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo?

Only if the file is DRM-free. Store purchases are usually locked to the store’s own app. Since January 2026 Amazon lets buyers download some DRM-free Kindle books as EPUB or PDF — those work. See the Kindle guide on this site for the details.

Is it free?

Lyraboo is free to start: one hour of listening every month, no card needed. More hours come with a subscription; in the US the Monthly plan is $9.99. Replaying a chapter you already generated is free.

Can I download the audiobook as an MP3?

Not in Lyraboo — the audio plays inside the app, and it needs an internet connection. If you need a file, @Voice Aloud Reader can record its reading as MP3, OGG or WAV.
