Written by the Lyraboo team, so we are not neutral — and Lyraboo only covers one of the jobs
below. Facts about the other tools come from their own websites, checked in October 2026.
Pick by what you want at the end
| You want | Use | Trade-off |
| An audio file (MP3) | Online converters; NaturalReader’s app; @Voice Aloud Reader | One voice, no player — you manage the files |
| A document read to you | Speechify, ElevenReader, NaturalReader, Paper2Audio | Natural voices; one voice for everything |
| A paper with footnotes and maths | Paper2Audio | Skips references, explains tables — not for fiction |
| Free, nothing to install | Microsoft Edge Read Aloud; ebook readers with phone TTS | One voice; Edge needs a computer |
| A book, as an audiobook | Lyraboo | Every character in their own voice; Android, online |
1. You need an audio file: a converter
Online PDF-to-MP3 converters take the file and give back audio in one synthetic voice. They are
the right tool when the audio has to live somewhere else — a car stereo, a course platform, an
old MP3 player. On a phone, NaturalReader’s app exports MP3 and @Voice Aloud Reader records MP3,
OGG or WAV. What you do not get is a player that knows chapters or remembers where you stopped.
2. You want a document read to you: a reader app
- Speechify — Android, iPhone, web, Mac, Windows and browser extensions; scans
paper pages; Premium ($29 a month) adds 1,000+ natural voices and up to 5× speed.
- ElevenReader — Android, iPhone and web; ElevenLabs voices; 10 free hours a
month, then $11 a month or $99 a year.
- NaturalReader — web, iPhone, Android and Chrome; OCR camera scanner and MP3
export in the app; free forever plan.
- Paper2Audio — for research papers and textbooks: cuts footnotes and
references, explains tables, figures and maths; 56 free hours a week.
All of them read in one voice, which suits reports, articles and study notes.
3. Free and already on your device
On a computer, open the PDF in Microsoft Edge and press Read aloud: natural
online voices, adjustable speed, no account. On Android, ebook readers such as
ReadEra, Moon+ Reader and Librera open PDFs and read them with the phone’s
text-to-speech engine — free and offline, in the same flat voice that reads your notifications.

Android.
4. It is a book: turn it into an audiobook
A novel is not a report. Read in one voice, a story turns into a puzzle — the listener has to
work out who is speaking from the words alone, and long dialogue falls apart. Lyraboo
turns a text-based PDF into an audiobook with a full cast: a narrator for the description and
every character in their own AI voice, kept for the whole book, so you always know who is
talking. It plays like a music app — chapters, 0.25×–3× speed, lock-screen controls, resume
where you stopped — with the text scrolling under the player like song lyrics, each line
labelled with its speaker. Upload the PDF and press play; the first chapter is ready in about
one to two minutes.
Its limits: Android only, needs a connection, no MP3 export, no OCR for scans,
and one free hour a month before a subscription. The full comparison of book apps:

audiobook.
Before you convert anything
- Check for a text layer. Select a sentence in the PDF. If you cannot, it is a
scan: run OCR first, or use Speechify’s or NaturalReader’s scanner.
- Prefer EPUB if you have it. EPUBs mark chapters and have no page headers,
so they read more cleanly than the same book as a PDF.
- Mind the DRM. Protected store books open only in the store’s own app.

PDF into an audiobook.
